Head Coach Lance Madison
   Lance Madison became the Seahawks’ basketball coach after accepting the position offered by Lamar State College-Port Arthur Athletic Director Scott Street on Saturday, May 12, 2012.
     In his first season as the leader of the Hawks, Madison's squad finished 21-11 overall and went two rounds deep into the NJCAA Region XIV post-season tournament.
     Madison came to LSC-PA from Oklahoma City University where he served one year as assistant coach for the OCU Stars, members of the Sooners Athletic Conference in the NAIA Division I. During the 2011-2012 season, the Stars finished with a 12-15 record, falling to national runner-up Oklahoma Baptist University in overtime in the Sooners Conference tournament.
     He made his way to OCU after two seasons as men’s basketball assistant coach at Hutchinson, Kan., for Steve Eck. The tradition-rich Blue Dragons finished 26-7, raned No. 1 in the NJCAA poll, in second place in regular-season league play and in the NJCAA Region VI semifinals in 2010-11. During Madison’s first season in Hutchinson, the Blue Dragons were 27-6 with another second-place showing and semifinal finish.While there, Lance coached All-American Joe Mitchell.
     Prior to Hutchinson, Madison spent two seasons at Cowley County, Kan. In two seasons at Cowley, Madison’s record was 60-8, including a school-record 31 victories in 2007-08. Cowley won a pair of Jayhawk Conference East championships and appeared in two Region VI championship games and were ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. Assistant Coach Barry Wellington
    Barry Wellington joined the Seahawks Basketball Coaching staff for the 2012-13 season.  He brings a wealth of collegiate and professional playing experience to the staff at Lamar State College – Port Arthur.
     Wellington played his high school basketball in the round ball hotbed of Memphis, Tennessee.  He attended the same high school as NBA Superstar “Penny” Hardaway and was one of the best seniors in the city in 2005-06, where he averaged 25 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds at Treadwell High.  He plans on using his ties to the talent-rich area to build a recruiting network for the Seahawks throughout the mid-south. Student Assistant Javon Brown
  Javon Brown is a sophomore kinesiology major at Lamar State and a 2011 graduate of Port Arthur Memorial High School.
   He is the son of Harry III and Marina Brown. He has a brother Harry IV, and a sister, Victoria.    Harry IV is currently playing football for Texas Southern University.
   Once he finishes his degree, Javon plans to become a high school basketball coach.

Student Assistant John Hopkins
    John Hopkins, a 2006 graduate of Nederland High School, is a sophomore kinesiology major at Lamar State.
    He is the son of Barry and Lisa Tomplait and has a brother, Derrick Hopkins, and a sister, Paige Angelle.
    His plans are to finish his degree and eventually become a head coach at the collegiate level.

12 • Evan White

 

6-foot-3, Guard, Sophomore ~ East Central HS, San Antonio, TX

 

 

LSCPA 2012-13
Averaged 6.7 points a game during the regular season, hitting 42 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. Tied the school record for free throw percentage at 85 percent.

 

 

High School
A standout player at East Central, he averaged 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks his senior season. He earned multiple all-district accolades, finished ninth in San Antonio in scoring his senior season, was MVP of the San Antonio ISD (Large Division) Tournament, and led his team to the Class 5A playoffs each of his three varsity seasons.

-- Evan was the first player to commit to Lamar State during Coach Madison’s first recruiting season.
-- He is the son of Everette and Raye Lynn White. Has one brother, Ethan.
-- Majoring in Mathematics with the goal of teaching math and coaching basketball.

15 • Tre Bennett
5-foot-10, Guard, Sophomore ~ Yates HS, Houston, TX

LSC-PA 2012-13
Averaged 8.5 points a game his freshman season with the Seahawks. Shot 79 percent from the free throw line. He had 74 rebounds and 73 assists, second best on the team. He added 32 steals during the season. His 10-assist performance against Jacksonville College on Feb. 2, 2013 is third-best in the college's history.


High School
Spent two years at Milby High School before joining the storied program at Yates for his senior season. During his one year at Yates, he had one of the best performances in the state, scoring 46 points with eight rebounds, nine assists and eight steals … in one game. He was a three-year all-district performer, averaging 20 points, eight assists, four rebounds and four steals his senior season. He also spent one season at Charis Prep in North Carolina and was part of a national championship team for the 2011-12 season.
Personal
--The son of Charles Bennett Jr. and Renetta. Has two brothers, Deonte and Zed.
-- Majoring in Business with the goal of becoming a successful business owner.

20 • David "D.J." Blanks

 

6-foot-3, Guard, Sophomore ~ St. Vincent/St. Mary HS, Akron, OH
At Glenville State University
Blanks started 21 games as a true freshman at Glenville State, an NCAA Division II program in West Virginia. He averaged 11.3 points, 4.5 assists and 4 rebounds during his one year at Glenville, earning the WVIAC Player of the Week award after coming off the bench for a triple-double (12 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds) in his first conference game, helping the Pioneers to an 87-83 win. He was also named to the WVIAC All-Freshman team and was the recipient of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, awarded to any student-athlete who maintains a 3.0 or better grade point average during the fall and spring semesters.
High School
Blanks played at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High School in Akron, Ohio, the same high school where 2013 NBA MVP LeBron James attended school. During his senior season at SVSM, Blanks averaged nearly 20 points a game during his senior season. As a junior, he helped lead his school to the 2011 Division II Ohio state championship. He played for the King James Shooting Stars AAU team throughout his prep years. He was ranked No. 17 in Ohio as a senior by MaxPreps.

21 • Erik Durham

 

6-foot-4, Guard, Freshman ~ Parkview HS, Springfield, MO
High School
Durham, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who graduated from Parkview High School, averaged 25.3 points per game this past season, was a first-team all-state performer and set a new Parkview single-game scoring record with 44 points against West Plains HS on Jan. 1. Two weeks later he proved it wasn't a fluke when he scored 42 in a win over Rolla HS. Durham was a big part of three consecutive 7-2 finished by Parkview in the Ozark Conference, as well as a member of three consecutive 20-win teams. The Vikings were 22-6 this season before falling in the district championship game to Willard.An all-around scorer who can put the ball in the basket from all over the court, Durham shot 56 percent from the field, 45 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 74 at the free throw line. He made 71 3-pointers, averaged 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and led the team with 72 steals.

-- The son of Doug and Barbara Durham, he has a sister, Aimee.
-- Erik is majoring in Sports Medicine. After playing professionally either in the States or abroad, he hopes to be an athletic physical trainer.

23 • Jovan "JoJo" Mooring

 

 

 

6-foot-1, Guard, Freshman ~ Hillcrest HS, Chicago, IL
High School
Mooring was a standout performer for Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills in
Illinois, leading his team to its 25th straight Chicago South Suburban Blue Division championship his senior year. The Hawks were 24-8 in 2013 and won the Super Sectional on the way to an Illinois Class 3A semifinal appearance.
Mooring averaged 19 points, 3.5 assists and shot over 80 percent from the free throw line. He earned many honors his senior season, including Illinois IBCA Class 3A All-State, the Chicago Tribune All-State Special Mention Team,  was named the South Suburban Blue Division Player of the Year, and the CSN (Chicago Sports Network) Allstate Athlete of the Week.
Jovan was listed as the No. 37 prospect in the state by MaxPreps and had NCAA DI recruiting interest from Northern Kentucky, Akron, Western Kentucky, Miami (OH), and Northern Illinois.  According to ChicagoHoops.com “Jovan Mooring of Hillcrest ranks among the top uncommitted Class of 2013 prospects in the state of Illinois. He is an electric scorer who has the ability to carry a team offensively for stretches.”
Personal
-- The son of Reginald Durr and Janis Mooring. He has three brothers -- Edward Jamison, Reginald Durr Jr., and Russell Durr -- and a sister, Tachiana Durr.
-- JoJo's favorite movie is "Coach Carter" and his favorite television show is "Fresh Prince of Bellaire."
-- His favorite athletic moment? At 14 years old, JoJo played two levels up in a 16-under game, scoring 52 points.

25 • Garth Brown

 

6-foot-3, Guard, Freshman ~ Tabernacle Baptist HS, Freeport, Bahamas

Played sparingly as a freshman though came on strong in the second half of the season. Strong on the boards, he pulled down 20 rebounds in limited time on the floor.

High School
Left Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy to attend as an international student at Athens Christian in Atlanta where he was named Northeast Georgia Player of the Year in his one season playing basketball in the U.S. He averaged 27 points and 9.2 rebounds a game and was named to the 8A All-Region and Georgia Sportswriters All-State teams.

-- Garth is the son of Garth and Maria Brown. He has one brother, Neko, and three sisters, Nika, Desha, and Nisha.

The incoming freshman, standing 6-foot-4, 175 pounds, is a graduate of Coral Gables High School where he led the Cavaliers to a 15-10 regular season record and a 7-3 conference mark his senior year.During that campaign, Dawson averaged 14 points a game with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Dawson earned rave reviews from recruiting services, one saying “Antonio is a strong and athletic combo-guard with Division I level talent. He can get to the basket at will, pull-up and score off a jumper, or create scoring opportunities for teammates.”

-- Antonio is the son of Anthony Dawson and Monica Fletcher. He has a brother, Troy Davis, and a sister, Marcila Fletcher.
-- Majoring  in Business, Antonio hopes to become a coach.-- When he's not watching "Spongebob" or listening to Lil Wayne and Meek Mill, he is volunteering with youth camps.”

32 • Anthony Allen
7-foot-1, Center, Freshman ~ Bassick HS, Bridgeport, Conn.

LSC-PA 2012-13
Led the NJCAA with 155 blocked shots during the season, averaging a nation-wide-best 5.2 blocks per game. His mark set a new school record, as did his 13-block performance against Blinn College on Feb. 20, 2013.
Allen is also the first Seahawk to record multiple triple-doubles during a season, accomplishing that feat twice against Blinn (10 points, 13 rebounds, 13 blocks) and Lee College on Feb. 23, 2013 (11, 11, 10).
Allen averaged 61 percent from the field, entering the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament as the second best in conference. Allen scored 8.2 points a game and pulled down 195 rebounds.
He was named to the Third Team All-Region XIV Conference South Zone.
High School
He led Bassick High School to two state championships in 2008 and 2010. Signed by the University of Ohio out of high school.
Before Lamar State
Red-shirted at the College of Southern Idaho before transferring to Lamar State this season.
Personal
-- The son of Anthony Allen and Sheryl Johnson. He has six siblings: brothers Thurany and Theadore; sisters Triquenya, Tanisha, Trisha and Tania.
-- The first 7-footer to play for Lamar State College-Port Arthur.

33 • Ivan Jelencic
6-foot-7, Forward/Center, Freshman ~ Traffic-Tech HS, Šibenik, Croatia

LSC-PA 2012-13
Ivan came on strong in conference play, finishing the season with 112 points and 107 rebounds. His top moment of the year came at the free throw line when he hit two free throws with no time left to lead LSC-PA past Angelina College.

High School
Graduated from Traffic-Technical High School in Croatia. He comes to Port Arthur after a solid showing for the under-17 Croatian National Team and the GKK Šibenik Basketball Club.

--Though he says he will “answer to anything,” his first name is pronounced “ee-von”.

42 • Jamal Shabazz
6-foot-6, Guard/Forward, Freshman ~ Pflugerville HS, Pflugerville, TX

LSC-PA 2012-13
Jamal led the Seahawks in rebounds with 255 while averaging 9.8 points a game, good enough to earn him a spot on the Honorable Mention All-Region XIV South Zone team. His 255 rebounds is good enough for second-best in LSC-PA basketball history. He finished the season ranked 47th nationally in rebounding average (8.5 rpg) and 48th in the nation for defensive rebound average (5.5 rpg).
Shabazz shot 76 percent from the free-throw line and 52 percent from the field.

 

 

 

High School
Shabazz was selected as all-district twice, all-state and was an honor student at Pflugerville. He played for the Texas Thunder and the Austin ATX AAU programs, playing in several high-profile tournaments across the nation. Sports website MaxPreps had him ranked as the ninth best small forward in the state and 51st in the nation.
