Sharp-shooting Panola rallies by Seahawks

Ponies more accurate from beyond the 3-point line than from inside it

Near perfection from the free-throw line and some sizzling 3-point shooting carried Panola College to a 79-74 win over Lamar State College Port Arthur Friday night in Port Arthur's Parker Center.

Marlon Taylor scored 23 points and teammate Juwan Williams 19 and together they combined to hit 9 of 12 3-pointers for a Panola team that shot better outside the bonus arc (57 percent, 12 of 21) than it did from 2-point range (45 percent, 14 of 32).

Rodney Brown scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead LSCPA, which drops to 6-8 on the season and 0-4 in Region 14 play. The Seahawks led by four points, 69-65, with 3:27 to play but hit only 2 of 7 shots down the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Ponies scored on 6-for-6 free throw shooting, a pair of 3-pointers by Williams and a defensive lapse that left Panola big man Alex Holcombe open under the basket.

The Seahawks went on an early 16-0 run and led 23-8 midway through the first period. The Ponies scored 12 in a row in a 19-3 run and led 39-33 at the half.

Jase Miguez and Stefan Radosavljevic teamed to assist each other's baskets as the Seahawks overcame a four-point deficit and took a 65-61 lead on baskets by Brown and Tevin Baker with 4:50 remaining.
