Seahawks sophomore Kanntrell Burney (3) drained seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points in a 77-61 loss to 20th-ranked Panola College in Carthage Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Seahawk sophomore Kanntrell Burney hit on seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points Wednesday night.

But No. 20-ranked Panola College led from end-to-end to take a 77-61 homecourt win over Lamar State College Port Arthur in Carthage.

Panola, which knocked off the NJCAA's 11th-ranked team, Navarro, 81-76, last weekend to rate a spot in the Top 25, improves to 3-0 on the season and 3-0 in Region 14 play. LSCPA is 1-2, 1-2.

The Seahawks are back on the road for their next game, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Victoria College. Their next home game is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3 against Kilgore College.

Freshmen Cody Deen and Tytan Newton each scored 14 points to lead the Ponies, while two teammates each scored 13 points.

The Ponies led 29-22 at the end of the first half.

Burney, a sophomore out of Dallas Skyline, ignited in the second half, scoring 25 points – and six of his 3-pointers – after intermission.

But the Ponies led by as many as 19 points, hitting that mark at 60-41, with 7:30 to go. The closest LSCPA could get after that was seven points after Burney's last 3-pointer made it 65-58 with 3:05 left.

Joseph Lucien led LSCPA with seven rebounds and added nine points. Ty Archibald scored seven points and sophomore Kobi Johnson six points.

The Ponies outrebounded the Seahawks 42-34 and took advantage of a chilly night both outside the gym and inside.

LSCPA hit just 32.4% of its shots from the floor (23 of 71) and 30.8% of 3-point shots (8 of 26).

Panola jumped to an 8-0 lead at the start of the game as guard Isaac Jackson hit a couple of 3-pointers while the Seahawks came up empty on their first four trips upcourt.

A bucket by Adrian Caldwell II on a feed from Lucien drew the Seahawks within a point – 12-11 – nine minutes into the game. In the next four minutes, the Ponies went on a 12-2 run to lead by 11 at 24-13, with 7:05 left in the first half.

Down by seven at half, the Seahawks cut the deficit to five, 29-24, by scoring a Burney layup off the second-half whistle. Deen, scoreless at half, answered with a 3-pointer and seven points was as close as the Seahawks would get in the game's final 18:30.

Starting the season two months later than in the past because of COVID-19, the 2021 NJCAA Region 14 schedule includes only conference games.
