Ty Archibald became the second Seahawk this season to match the school record of eight 3-pointers in a game in Saturday's second-half comeback win over Tyler Junior College. Archibald scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half.

Sophomore Ty Archibald, one of Region 14's most accurate shooters a year ago, had the hot hand Saturday in Victoria.

The transfer from Trinity Valley Community College hit on 10 of 17 shots -- including seven 3-pointers -- and scored 30 points to lead Lamar State College Port Arthur to an 81-72 come-from-behind win over Victoria College Saturday afternoon.

Teammates Kanntrell Burney and Joe Lucien added 16 points each as the Seahawks outscored the Pirates 46-36 in the second half after trailing 36-35 at the half.

Burney, coming off a 32-point night Wednesday at Panola College, pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists.

"When we hit some shots and rebound the basketball we can be a pretty strong team," Seahawks head coach Lance Madison said.

"We knew Ty could get hot and when he did, we did a good job of getting him the ball. Adrian Caldwell played well, Kantrell Burney's a playmaker, and he hit some tough shots.

"Now we've got to get ready for Kilgore College Wednesday night."

The Seahawks host the Kilgore College Rangers at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Carl Parker Center on Lakeshore Drive in Port Arthur, Texas. The Bulldogs are off to a 3-1 start. LSCPA is 2-2 for the season, which consists of Region 14 conference games only this year, and Victoria dropped to 1-3.

Caldwell, a 6-foot-5 freshman out of Katy's Morton Ranch High School, was second on the team with six rebounds, scored six points and assisted on four more baskets.

Burney, LSCPA's top returner from last year's team and a 5-11 sophomore from Dallas Skyline High School, scored 11 of his points after half.

Meanwhile, Lucien, a 6-7 freshman out of Beaumont West Brook, hit seven of 12 from the floor, including four slam dunks off slick feeds by Burney and other teammates. He also blocked three shots.

Victoria College, a first-year NJCAA Division I team, led by as many as 10 points in the first half, 31-21, with 5:46 left in the first half. Archibald hit a pair of treys and Lucien, added four points in a 14-5 LSCPA run to get the Seahawks back into the game at half.

Archibald, a Houston Christian High School grad, who finished No. 8 in Region 14 for 3-point accuracy with 40.9% as a TVCC freshman in 2020 and hit 44.9% on all shots from the floor, scored 22 of his points Saturday in the second half.

His driving layup-and-one gave LSCPA its first lead of the game, 43-42, a little more than 3 minutes into the second half. The Pirates took the lead back twice, but Li'jon Smith's free throw with 15:53 in the game put the Seahawks ahead to stay, 49-48.

Archibald and Burney added to the lead with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 7-point, 55-48 lead with 13:36 remaining. Another 3-pointer by Archibald widened the lead to 8 at 58-50, with 11:54 left, and then his tip-in at 9:55 made it a 10-point, 60-50 lead.

After Archibald hit his third and fourth of five second-half treys, LSCPA led by 16, 72-56, with 6:01 remaining. The Pirates got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"I was proud of the way the guys came out in the second half because we started off kind of flat," Madison said. "We're still trying to get to know each other and the offenses because practices have been limited, because of COVID-19, and we normally build team unity through our non-conference games. This year, we didn't have any."
