Kanntrell Burney, 5-11 sophomore shooting guard for Lamar State College Port Arthur, improved to No. 3 in the nation in scoring after Wednesday night's 31-point performance against Trinity Valley Community College pushed his scoring average to 24.6 points per game.
Jesse Zarzuela of Missouri State-West Plains averages 25.4 points and Tairrell Fletcher of Arkansas Baptist is scoring at a 25.2-point pace.
Wednesday night was Burney's third 30-point performance of the season for the 1-7 Seahawks, who host Jacksonville College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 in NJCAA men's basketball at the Carl Parker Center on Lakeshore Drive in downtown Port Arthur.
The Dallas Skyline product, whose game mixes long-range 3-point bombs with slashing and spinning drives to the hoop, added a team-high 11 rebounds against the Cardinals.
That was good for his second double-double of the season. He has scored in double figures in each of the Seahawks games so far this season.
Burney is third in the nation in field goals made per game this season – 8.8 – and No. 2 in 3-pointers made per game – 4.6 – and No. 1 in both 3-point shots (12.0) and all shots (21.4) attempted per game.
Sophomore teammate Ty Archibald is second for LSCPA in scoring at 18.6 points per game and fifth in the nation in steals per game, 3.6.
The top scorer from Houston Christian's 2019 state champs who transferred to LSCPA from Trinity Valley, Archibald ranks 11th in the nation in 3-point baskets per game – 3.6.
Archibald picked up a double-double with season highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds in LSCPA's 98-70 upset of previously unbeaten Blinn College on Feb. 6. He ranks No. 7 in scoring in Region 14.
As a team, the Seahawks rank No. 2 in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (11.75), trailing only Cowley College of Kansas, which is averaging 12.5 bonus buckets per outing.
Lamar State ranks No. 1 in 3-point scoring in Region 14 and No. 4 in total points per game at 78.8.
Burney and Archibald rank 1-2 for 3-pointers in Region 14.
