In a perfect finish to splendid sophomore seasons at home, Seahawks Kanntrell Burney and Tydan Archibald scored 25 and 23 points, respectively, to lead Lamar State College Port Arthur to an 88-77 win over Coastal Bend College on Wednesday -- Sophomore Day -- at the Carl Parker Center.

The Seahawks, who have one more regular season game set before opening play in the NJCAA Region 14 tournament Tuesday, April 6, improved to 7-13 for the season in winning their second game in a row for just the second time.

Burney, a sophomore from Dallas Skyline, sank five of his six 3-pointers in a 17-point first half that opened a 43-31 LSCPA lead at intermission. Archibald, a sophomore from Katy, scored three of his four treys and 14 points in the first half.

Burney picked up his fourth double-double of the season, adding 10 assists and six rebounds. Archibald pulled down seven rebounds and dished out eight assists.

Coach Lance Madison started all five of his program's sophomores in their final home game.

Big Kenyawn Bowie, a Dallas Kimball grad who with Burney was the only returner from last year's team, scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore transfers Kobi Johnson and Li'Jon Smith rounded out the lineup, with Johnson chipping in five points and five assists and Smith earning three rebounds and an assist.

Freshmen Joe Lucien and Nash Golaszewski also hit double digits in points. Lucien scored 12 to go with eight rebounds while Golaszewski pitched in 10 points and three boards.

Burney and Archibald scored 26 of the Seahawks' first 30 points (Lucien got the other four) as Port Arthur's team blasted out to a 12-point, 30-18, lead midway through the opening 20 minutes.

The Cougars, 5-10, got within three points at 34-31 before four different Seahawks scored in a 9-0 run to close the half.

Lamar State led by 10 or more points for all but 14 seconds of the final half.
