Seahawks hold off Navarro to improve to 8-1 at home
PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Nisani Mendez scored a game-high 24 points while Martins Adonry notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks started the new year on a winning note with a 73-67 victory over the visiting Navarro College Bulldogs in a Region XIV men's basketball game at the Carl Parker Center on Saturday.
The Seahawks (8-5 overall, 2-3 Region XIV) raced out to a 38-23 halftime lead and held off a furious Navarro rally down the stretch.
"We knew Navarro would make a run in the second half," LSCPA coach Lance Madison said. "They hit some tough shots, but we found a way to close out the game. That's something we're learning how to do."
The Seahawks held a 46-35 rebounding advantage over the Bulldogs and committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
"We're a good rebounding team," Madison said. "I thought our physicality was a key to the win."
Isaiah Brooks had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Seahawks, who improved to 8-1 at the Carl Parker Center this season.
Liban Aadan led Navarro (7-6, 1-4) with 13 points.
The Seahawks travel to Baytown to meet the Lee College Navigators (7-5, 3-2) at 7 p.m. Wednesday before returning home to host Bossier Parish Community College at 4 p.m. Jan. 10.
