PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Zion Young scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks to a 69-58 win over the Coastal Bend College Cougars in a Region XIV men's basketball game at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center on Wednesday night.
Young was one of three Seahawks to score in double figures on the evening. Christian Andrews had 17 points, while Nisani Mendez had 11 points for LSCPA (11-10 overall, 5-8 Region 14) as the Seahawks avenged an 85-81 overtime loss at Coastal Bend on Jan. 14.
"This was a good team effort tonight," LSCPA coach Lance Madison said. "We kept our composure in a very physical game. We controlled the ball, and we made our free throws."
The Seahawks had just 11 turnovers for the game and went 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) from the foul line. Andrews was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Hayden Underwood and J'Mar Franklin each went 4-of-4.
Isaiah Brooks led LSCPA with nine rebounds. Martins Adonry had seven rebounds to go along with three blocks and three steals.
"Martins did a good job defensively," Madison said. "He came up with a key blocked shot when Coastal Bend was trying to make a late run."
Matthew Johnson and Jarrius Jackson Jr. had 12 points apiece to pace Coastal Bend (6-15, 3-10).
The Seahawks return home at 2 p.m. Saturday to host Paris Junior College (10-10, 5-7) in LSCPA's annual Homecoming game. Festivities start at noon with a live band, free food, and free drinks.
"We'd love to see everybody come out on Saturday," Madison said. "It should be a great atmosphere. We're 11-2 at home this season. Our guys love playing here, and we want everyone to come out and see what Seahawks basketball is all about."
