PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Zion Young drained five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 17 points, but the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks saw their rally come up just short in a 51-50 loss to the Angelina College Roadrunners in a Region XIV basketball game at the Carl A. Parker Multipurpose Center on Wednesday.
The Seahawks (12-17 overall, 6-15 Region XIV) rallied from a 31-17 halftime deficit to take a 50-46 lead into the final minute, but the Roadrunners (17-12, 11-10) scored the final five points. The Seahawks had a chance to win it in the dying seconds, but a turnover proved to be costly.
"We played really great defense in the second half," LSCPA coach Lance Madison said. "We frustrated them, but give them credit, they made the plays down the stretch."
Martins Adonry had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Seahawks. Christian Andrews had nine points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists. J'Mar Franklin had eight points for LSCPA.
The Seahawks held a 31-29 rebounding edge, but the Roadrunners had 10 offensive rebounds, seven of them after halftime.
"Angelina came up with some big offensive rebounds to get some second-chance points," Madison said. "That was one of the differences."
Jayden Spears led a balanced Angelina attack with 10 points.
Seahawk Sophomores: Prior to the contest, LSCPA honored six sophomores who played their final home game. Madison and assistant coach Brock Thewman presented mementos to Franklin, Andrews, Young, Adonry, Hayden Underwood and Isaiah Brooks. Brooks, who is injured, was the only sophomore not to play on Wednesday.
Up Next: The Seahawks close out the regular season at 2 p.m. Friday at Paris Junior College. That game is a makeup of the Jan. 24 contest that was postponed due to treacherous travel conditions. The Seahawks then start play in the Region XIV opponent in Baytown. The date, time, and opponent for that contest have not been determined.
