Lamar State College Port Arthur managed four runs over the fifth and sixth innings against Blinn College on Friday afternoon but it wasn't enough to overcome six first-inning runs by the Buccaneers as the Seahawks fell 11-4 in their NJCAA Region 14 showdown.
The Buccaneers, ranked No. 18 in the nation in the most recent NJCAA poll, improved to 20-0 in conference play, 39-12 overall, while the Seahawks fell to 6-14 and 15-24.
Blinn College piled up six runs in the first inning, then added three more in the fourth for a 9-0 lead before LSCPA could get its offense moving forward with the Hawks scoring two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-4.
Freshman Vanessa Espitia opened the fifth with a walk, followed up by a Elicia Gonzales single and a Makasha Brown walk to load the bases. Brooke Smith picked up the RBI on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the inning. Sophomore Taylor Frederick followed that with a single on a line drive to left to score another.
In the sixth, freshman Madeline Stone singled to open the inning, then moved to third when sophomore Olivia Rivera reached then moved to second on an error by Blinn. Espitia picked up a couple of RBIs on a line drive to centerfield to give LSCPA its third and fourth runs of the game.
The Buccaneers came on in the bottom of the sixth to add two more runs for the 11-4 final advantage.
The Seahawks managed six runs in the game with Frederick and Stone each going 2 for 4. Espitia and Gonzales accounted for the Hawks' two other hits in the game.
Espitia started in the pitcher's circle, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in one inning of work as she took the loss. Rivera worked three innings in relief, giving up three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout. Jessica Saenz closed, allowing two earned runs on four hits over the final two innings of play.
