A two-out home run by Kaitlyn Samarripa brought Lamar State College Port Arthur to within one run of Kilgore College but it wouldn't be enough as the visiting Rangers took a 5-4 first-game doubleheader win at Marauder Park in Lumberton on Wednesday, March 3.
The Seahawks, now 5-9 as they conclude their non-conference schedule, fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third as the Rangers followed an LSCPA fielding error with a pair of doubles and a two-out single for the lead.
The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning when Maylin Louvier doubled home Riana Tovar for the 3-1 difference heading to the fourth. The Rangers added a run in the sixth and another in the seventh for a 5-1 lead.
The Seahawks opened the bottom of the seventh with two quick outs but Louvier earned a four-pitch walk inbetween. Cameron Niedenthal singled to thirde to put runners at first and second.
Facing a two-strike count, Samarripa crushed a home run to center field to pull the Seahawks to within one at 5-4. The Rangers got out of the jam, though, with a game-ending strikeout.
Samarripa finished 2 for 3 with a run scored, three runs batted in and a walk while Louvier and Savannah Trahan each recorded a double in the game. Tovar picked up a stolen base.
