PARIS, Texas — Lamar State College Port Arthur opened its 2026 softball season on Saturday with a difficult road doubleheader against No. 7‑ranked Paris Junior College, gaining valuable early‑season experience despite dropping both games. The Seahawks showed encouraging signs in several areas as they began their first weekend of competition.

Lamar State struck first in the opener when Jalise Martinez singled home a run in the top of the first inning, giving the Seahawks an early lead. Paris answered with three runs in the bottom half and added another in the second before breaking the game open with a 12‑run fourth inning.
The Seahawks collected three hits in the game, with Martinez, Mallory Cheek, and J'Lee Vaughn each recording one. LSCPA also displayed aggressiveness on the bases, tallying four stolen bases, including two from Alyssa Lewis.
Pitcher Kendall Hurt worked 3.1 innings in her season debut, allowing five earned runs while striking out one against one of the nation's top offenses.

In the second game, Paris Junior College used a first‑inning grand slam to take an early lead and added runs in the third and fifth innings to complete the sweep.
Lamar State's defense was a bright spot, as the Seahawks played error‑free softball and handled every chance cleanly. Offensively, Abigail Moreno and Vaughn each collected hits, while Lewis again led the team defensively with four fielding chances.
Aubre Fuller pitched 4.2 innings for LSCPA, facing a disciplined Paris lineup that worked seven walks and capitalized on key opportunities.
Early Season Progress
Despite the results, the Seahawks showed competitive energy, speed on the bases, and steady defensive play—encouraging signs as the team settles into the season. Opening against a top‑10 opponent provided LSCPA with a strong benchmark as they prepare for the weeks ahead.
The Seahawks return to action Sunday when they travel to Athens, Texas, to face No. 9‑ranked Trinity Valley Community College, continuing a challenging early‑season stretch against nationally recognized programs.
