GULF SHORES, Ala. — Lamar State College Port Arthur wrapped up the second and final day of the Coyote Classic on Saturday, taking on Northwest Shoals and Mississippi Gulf Coast in a pair of competitive matchups that highlighted the Seahawks' grit, offensive potential, and continued development early in the season.
The Seahawks played back‑to‑back contests at 3:45 p.m. and 6 p.m., using the tournament atmosphere to sharpen their lineup and build momentum before returning home for Region XIV action.
Game 1 — Northwest Shoals 9, Seahawks 6
Lamar State opened the day with an energetic performance against Northwest Shoals, showing strong offensive pressure and disciplined at‑bats throughout the lineup.
After Northwest Shoals jumped ahead in the first inning, the Seahawks settled in and began chipping away behind steady contact and smart baserunning. Mallory Cheek delivered a key swing from the seven‑spot, driving in two runs and helping fuel the comeback push.
The Seahawks' offense stayed active all game, collecting seven walks and forcing Northwest Shoals to work deep into counts. Alyssa Lewis and J'Lee Vaughn each drew two walks, while Marissa Montoya, Quinn Zaragoza, and Adeija Montalvo all tallied two hits apiece.
In the circle, Aubre Fuller battled through three innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out one. The Seahawks also flashed leather, turning a clean double play and swiping three stolen bases to keep pressure on the defense.
Despite the late push, Northwest Shoals held on, but the Seahawks' offensive rhythm and aggressiveness were clear signs of a team trending upward.
Game 2 — Mississippi Gulf Coast 7, Seahawks 0
In the night matchup, Lamar State continued to compete with toughness against a strong Mississippi Gulf Coast squad.
Grace Hirst provided a bright spot in relief, tossing four innings and allowing zero earned runs, striking out two and walking just one. Kendall Hurt opened the game in the circle, collecting a strikeout of her own.
Offensively, Quinn Zaragoza once again set the tone at the top of the order, going a perfect 2-for-2 and continuing her standout day at the plate.
While the Bulldogs used a big second inning to create separation, the Seahawks held them to just two runs the rest of the way, showing defensive adjustments and improved command in the circle.
Looking Ahead — First Home Doubleheader of the Season vs. Kilgore College
With the Coyote Classic now behind them, the Seahawks return to Port Arthur with valuable experience and a clearer sense of identity as they prepare for Region XIV play.
Lamar State will host its first home games of the season on February 25, welcoming Kilgore College to Martin Field for a conference doubleheader with first pitch set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Seahawks' competitive spirit in Gulf Shores sets the stage for an exciting home debut as they look to build momentum early in the year.
