PORT ARTHUR, Texas -- Quinn Zaragoza's two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 highlighted the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks sweep of the Kilgore Rangers in junior college softball action at a wind-swept Martin Field on Wednesday.
The Seahawks (3-7) cruised to a 10-2 victory in five innings in the opener before Zaragoza's heroics carried LSCPA to a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
"We got good pitching in both games," LSCPA coach Brittany Baker said. "Our bats came through for us as well.
Game 1: LSCA 10, Kilgore 2 (5 innings)
The Seahawks scored in every inning in the opener, scoring once in the first and fourth innings to sandwich a pair of four-run frames in the second and third innings. Sophia Kimble drove in three runs for the Seahawks, while Zaragoza, Alyssa Lewis and J'Lee Vaughn each scored two runs.
Freshman right-hander Aubre Fuller (1-4) picked up the win, allowing three hits while striking out three over five innings. The game was halted after the top of the fifth because of the eight-run rule. Eight of LSCPA's nine starters reached base in the first game.
Game 2: LSCPA 7, Kilgore 1
The Seahawks were clinging to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth before Zaragoza's short to right cleared the bases to give LSCPA a 6-1 lead. Lewis followed with a solo blast to left field to put an exclamation point on the inning.
"Quinn's grand slam was a momentum changer," Baker said. "It was a tight game until then."
Sophomore right-hander Kendall Hurt (2-3) pitched a complete game in the win, scattering six hits and striking out three. Kilgore's only run was an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. The Seahawks tied the game in the bottom of the third as Abigail Rutherford led off with a triple before Kaelyn Dartez lofted a sacrifice fly to center.
LSCPA took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Dartez led off with a double before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Abigail Moreno.
Kilgore fell to 5-19 on the season.
Looking ahead: The Seahawks travel to Mississippi for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.
LSCPA is at Hinds Community College at 1 p.m. Friday before facing Holmes Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Seahawks also have doubleheaders at Bossier Parish Community College on March 7 and Kilgore on March 8. LSCPA returns to Martin Field to host Baton Rouge Community College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on March 11 and Bossier Parish Community College for two games at 1 p.m. on March 15.
"Hopefully these two wins today get us going," Baker said. "We had good pitching, solid defense, and our hitters made adjustments. I was very pleased with our performance."
Admission to LSCPA home softball games is free.
