PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Aubre Fuller and Kendall Hurt each pitched complete-game victories as the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks softball team kept its hopes for a Region XIV Tournament berth alive by sweeping the visiting Angelina College Roadrunners by scores of 4-2 and 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.
With the wins, the Seahawks (10-24 overall, 6-10 Region XIV) moved into fifth place in the region with eight games remaining. The top four teams qualify for the tournament.
"These were two big wins for us today," LSCPA coach Brittany Baker said. "We gave ourselves a chance. We have to build off today's performance."
GAME 1: LSCPA 4, Angelina 2
Fuller allowed six hits and struck out four to earn the win. The Seahawks trailed 1-0 before erupting for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Jalise Martinez capping the outburst with a two-out, two-run double. Alyssa Lewis had two hits in the game, including a leadoff triple in the decisive sixth inning.
Game 2: LSCPA 9, Angelina 1 (5 innings)
The Seahawks broke open a tight game by erupting for six runs in the fifth game to end the game due to the eight-run rule. Lewis ended the game with a two-out, bases loaded single to plate Jillian Vykukal with the final run.
Vykukal, Quinn Zaragoza, Mallory Cheek, and Abigail Rutherford had two hits apiece for the Seahawks to support Hurt, who scattered seven hits. Martinez made a perfect throw from right field in the second inning to erase a player at the plate who was trying to score from second on a base hit.
Angelina fell to 14-32 overall and 5-15 in the region.
"Both games were competitive," Baker said. "We had one big inning in each game. We saw all three aspects: pitching, hitting, and fielding come together today."
Looking Ahead: The Seahawks return to action with a doubleheader at Alvin College at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The next home doubleheader for the Seahawks is set for 1 p.m. Saturday when Blinn College visits Martin Field.
Admission to LSCPA home softball games is free.
