PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Aubre Fuller and Kendall Hurt pitched complete-game victories as the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks softball team wrapped up its season with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Coastal Bend Cougars by scores of 6-0 and 11-3 at Martin Field on Wednesday.
"I was very proud of the way we finished," LSCPA coach Brittany Baker said. "What a way to end it."
The Seahawks (14-28 overall, 10-14 Region XIV South) finished in fifth place in the region, just missing out on qualifying for the regional tournament. The top four teams advanced to the tournament.
"Obviously, it's disappointing to miss the tournament, but we overcame a lot of adversity this season," Baker said. "I'm happy that the players were able to experience a great day to end the season."
The Seahawks honored 11 sophomores (Hurt, Makayla Baker, Mallory Cheek, Alyssa Lewis, Jalise Martinez, Marissa Montoya, Abigail Moreno, Sierra Perez, Kori Vasquez, J'Lee Vaughn, and Quinn Zaragoza) who were playing their final games in an LSCPA uniform.
"I'm going to miss them," Baker said. "They're hard workers, good students, and tremendous people. I appreciate what they have done for this program."
Fuller scattered six hits in tossing a shutout in the opener, striking out two. Zaragoza sparked the offense with a pair of triples and two RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Seahawks broke open a 3-3 game with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to end the game via the 8-run rule. Lewis and Perez each blasted homers for the Seahawks, while Martinez lashed a three-run double. The game ended on Montoya's RBI single in the sixth inning that set off an on-field celebration as the sophomores ended their careers with a convincing victory.
